CHUDEN Tatehiza no Bu

To sit in tatehiza, kneel down on your left knee, keeping both feet in place. Be sure to keep your back and head straight as you kneel. Lightly slap the left hakama leg as you kneel. Then put your right foot forward and lightly slap the right hakama leg. Sit on your left heel, move your right foot slightly back so that it is in the center of your body, facing straight toward the opponent, slightly ahead of the left knee, and with the arch of the foot not quite flat on the floor but raised at a narrow angle. Your hands should be relaxed and resting on the inside of your thighs, in close proximity to your sword.

To begin nukitsuke for tatehiza no bu, make very small circular motions with the left and right hands to grab the saya and koiguchi. Yoko chiburui is done with the sword level and slightly forward of your body. Use the hara. Noto is then done almost flat rather than a big circle. Bring your right hand in and slightly down as you noto.

When doing noto, bring your right foot back and in toward the center until it is just ahead of your left knee {according to your body}. At this point, the sword should be out of the saya about 5cm. Then bring the right foot around in a circle to the right and open your right leg. Then complete the noto. Be sure that you do not go too far back or open your leg too wide.
