OKUDEN I Waza

The following kata are done from tatehiza but differ from Tatehiza no bu in that they are to be done in a more flexible manner. Also, in this set of kata, there are multiple opponents. Constantly be aware of everything around you. Because of the great flexibility necessary to perform these techniques, the body must remain "natural" by going slowly and making large movements. As your skill increases, perform these kata quickly. Do not use too much strength during the movements and the cuts. Also, kankyu: tempo and timing, is extremely important. Be aware that the Jo in Jo Ha Kyu is very short in the upper level kata. Also, for chiburui, grab the koiguchi as you yoko chiburui.
Noto is done as in Tatehiza no Bu but more quickly at the ending. Do the final cut, hold still, then a fast chiburui and noto. Stop the sword about 10-15 cm from the tsuba. This should be done in a focused and strong manner; speed is not as important as focus.
